Happy Fourth of July everyone! Is there any better way to spend this summer holiday than with a barbecue and fireworks?!? Well, I’ve got a very special burger for your to try this year that combines the two most traditional and delicious items at a barbecue: hot dogs and hamburgers. I love hot dogs and I love burgers but I can never decide which one to eat…so why not combine them and then I can enjoy both in every bite! There’s not much to it. If you have a meat grinder at home, you can grind together ground meat and hot dogs with some salt and pepper. Without a meat grinder, I suggest chopping the hot dogs very small and adding it to ground meat. Either way, this burger actually tastes like a hot dog with the juiciness and texture of a hamburger! I topped my hot dog burger with easy homemade coleslaw, spicy ketchup and quick and crunchy pickled red onions.
Hot Dog Burgers
make 4-6 burgers
1 lb. ground meat
7-8 (12 oz) hot dogs
Pickled Red Onions
1 medium red onion
2 cups water
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
1 Tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 cup shredded coleslaw mix
1/2 cup low-fat mayonnaise
2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 Tbsp sugar
salt and pepper to taste
3 Tbsp ketchup
1 tsp Sriracha
I prepared the homemade condiments first so they would be ready for the burger. I stirred together Sriracha and ketchup. That’s all it takes to make spicy ketchup. For the coleslaw, I stirred together the mayonnaise, sugar, vinegar and salt. I added the coleslaw mix and stirred to combine. You can make this coleslaw a day ahead since the longer it sits, the better it tastes. The pickled red onions are also great to make ahead of time but you can certainly make them fresh.
This is such a simple pickling recipe! I combined the water, red wine vinegar, sugar and salt in a small saucepan. I brought the mixture to a boil over high heat, removed the saucepan from the stove and added the sliced red onions. I stirred once then set the onions aside to cool. Once cooled, the onions were ready to eat.
Once all of the condiments were ready and refrigerated, I prepared the hot dog burgers. I chopped the hot dogs and placed them in a bowl with the ground meat. I added the salt and pepper and combined.
Using my KitchenAid meat grinder attachment, I pushed the meat and hot dogs together through the grinder to create a new ground mixture. My son had so much fun grinding the meat and hot dogs!
Check out the texture of the meat! If you don’t own a grinder but you still want to make these burgers, you can just chop the hot dogs very small and add them to the ground burger meat.
I mixed the meat and formed 6 patties, each around 3/4 inch thick. Using my thumb, I pressed into the center of each patty to make an indentation. This prevents the burger from doming while cooking on the grill and helps keep the condiments on. I learned this trick from Rachael Ray. That lady can seriously make a burger! I sprinkled the burgers with some fresh cracked salt and pepper.
I heated the grill to around 350 degrees F. then carefully placed the burgers on the hot grill. I covered the grill and left the burgers along for 5-6 minutes.
I flipped the burgers, closed the grill, and cooked them for another 5 minutes. I love that you can see the specks of hot dog in the burger!
With a few minutes left on the burgers, I drizzled some olive oil on the inside of my burger buns and toasted them on the grill. It’s such a simple step but makes a huge difference to the flavor and texture of the finished burger.
And then it was time to put the whole burger together! I let them rest for a few minutes so the juices could redistribute inside the burger. If you cut right into the burger, the delicious juices will spill out everywhere. I placed the burger on the bun and piled on the condiments and devoured! There is just no wrong way to eat this burger. Enjoy!
